Kannadippaya: Kerala's First Tribal Handicraft to Receive GI Tag

In a momentous recognition of Kerala's tribal heritage, Kannadippaya, the distinctive woven craft known as the "mirror mat," has officially received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, becoming the first tribal handicraft from Kerala to be granted this prestigious status.
Crafted by the Oorali, Mannan, Muthuva, Malayan, Kadar, Ulladan, Malayarayan, and Hill Pulaya communities from the forested regions of Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Palakkad, Kannadippaya is woven from reed bamboo (Teinostachyum wightii). The mats are named for their signature reflective pattern, which resembles the surface of a mirror.
This historic achievement results from tireless efforts led by Dr. A.V. Raghu, Principal Scientist, and Dr. Syam Viswanath, former Director of the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI). Their work documenting and promoting the craft culminated in this recognition, which is a significant highlight during KFRI's Golden Jubilee year.
Celebrating the achievement, Dr. Kannan C.S. Warrier, Director of KFRI, remarked: "Securing the GI tag for Kannadippaya during KFRI's Golden Jubilee year is a remarkable achievement. This milestone not only preserves a rich tribal tradition but also contributes to the uplift of indigenous communities in the State."
The GI tag offers market protection and opens doors to global exposure for the artisans, helping ensure sustainable livelihoods and the continuity of traditional knowledge. With this recognition, Kannadippaya is poised to enter new markets while preserving the ecological and cultural ethos of the communities that nurture it.
As Kerala celebrates this achievement, the spotlight turns to the talented artisans whose hands have kept this tradition alive. Kannadippaya is no longer just a symbol of tribal identity—it is now a globally recognized treasure of Kerala's cultural tapestry.
