The Extension and Training Division of Kerala Forest Research Institute organized an Exhibition Stall at Town Hall, Thrissur on 05 to 06 July-2018 in connection with the Nhattuvela Celebrations of Agriculture Department, Thrissur. The programme was inaugurated by Hon'ble Minister for Agriculture Sri. VS Sunil Kumar.
The major attraction of the Nhattuvela Celebration was a Seminar Session on Agriculture Technologies which was moderated by Dr. SyamViswanath, Director, KFRI and an Exhibition by the Govt. Institutions, private agri. based agencies and other Stakeholder groups. Kerala Forest Research Institute also organized two stalls at the exhibition.
The major objective of the KFRI exhibition was to empower the stakeholders in bamboo based technologies and familiarizing farmers in agroforestry system with special focus on bamboo resources and medicinal plant varieties. Another stall was exclusively for value added bamboo products especially handicrafts and food items from bamboo shoots developed by KFRI bamboo clusters.
Three KFRI Bamboo Clusters, from Thrissur District viz. Bharath Handicrafts, an SC-ST Handicraft society Ramavarmapuram, Thrissur, Vedanda handicrafts, Kodakara and Syama Crafts and Musicals,Vellikulangara showcased their products. The Handicraft products were sold to the public. The Bamboo shoot technologies were also demonstrated to the visitors and it attracted farmers in large numbers. Some entrepreneurs also showed their interest to start food processing unit from bamboo shoots. Ms. Pavithra, IWST, Bangalore who is an expert in Bamboo shoot products cleared the doubts of the farmers on Bamboo shoot processing.
A booklet prepared by Dr. Syam Viswanath, Director, KFRI on bamboo shoot processing was also distributed to the farmers. The Exhibition generated interest among the farmers for taking up bamboo based enterprises and the relevance of integrating agro forestry technologies to make the farming practices more economically viable has also explained.
