Abstract
The current level of technology for sawing, veneer and glulam composite product manufacture from small dimensional timbers of teak plantations in developing countries, particularly India, is examined. There is a need for technology transfer to produce countries to increase the level of technology in mechanical wood industries that allows the use of smaller and younger trees. For instance, peeling lathes should be capable of handling logs up to a minimum diameter of 7 cm while modified vertical band saws can process small diameter logs more efficiently. Further, small portable or mobile sawmills (with a capacity of 5000 meter cube log intake) with portable solar kilns and preservative treatment plants (for sapwood), that can be easily moved from site to site during thinning or final felling operations, may be appropriate for improved utilisation of small timber. This can facilitate the supply of sawn wood requirements of rural communities, building contractors, furniture
