Abstract
In Kerala, attempts to genetically improve the planting stock were started as early as 1961, with the selection of a few plus trees. However, no further work was done in the state for selection of more plus trees or for the establishment of clonal seed orchard or progeny trial. With the joint effort of Kerala Forest Research Institute and Kerala Forest Department, a total of 750 ha of seed stands were marked as an interim source of better seeds until seed orchards are sufficiently productive. Forest Department has selected some more areas under seed stands and established 30 ha of production teak seed orchards. KFRI has selected 50 plus trees from various plantations in Kerala and established three pilot seed orchards. As the first phase of the planned genetic improvement of teak in Kerala is partly completed, the future scheme of work is discussed
