Abstract

Intraspecific phenotypic variation in rattans (Calamus spp.) is described and selection of superior genotypes from natural populations through progeny trials is discussed. The undertaking of species trials in various Asian countries to determine their suitability for cultivation in particular environmental conditions is outlined. Reproductive biology of rattans is briefly described. Scope for interspecific hybridization and breeding priorities are mentioned. The present status of in situ and ex situ conservation activities are discussed, and future research priorities to ensure adequate conservation of rattan genetic resources are listed
