Abstract

Rattan is one of the most important raw material which plays a vital role in rural economy of the state. As rattan industry is highly labour intensive and they are easy to plant and harvest, rattans are beneficial for common people. Nursery and planting techniques of rattan has been studied by KFRI. They also form a major component in social forestry scheme and can be used very effectively in shifting cultivation. Tribals indulging in rattan industry can be protected from middlemen exploitation by establishment of co-operative societies.
