Abstract
This chapter concentrates on the interpretation of evidence for the mechanism of long-distance transport of photoassimilates and the effects of environmental factors on both structural and physiological aspects of this process. It discusses the physiological aspects of sieve tube transport. The environment of sieve tubes can be regarded as: (a) internal, e.g. hormonal or solute levelsor (b) external, e.g. light, temperature, mechanical pressure. In this article selected key areas are examined
