Abstract
The depletion of rattan resources in the wild due to exploitation has necessitated investigations into the germplasm conservation and establishment of plantations. In this context, the use of tissue culture for large scale vegetative propagation is relevant where conventional methods are inadequate. In the genetic improvement of rattans, the use of tissue culture methods appear promising. It can be a useful aid to production of hybrids. Once the genetic variability in rattan is well studied, the clonal propagation of superior strains can be considered. Some clonal variation could be exploited to yield interesting results relating to improved appearance and ease of harvesting and processing, In vitro studies will also serve as a basis for any future genetic transformation studies
