Abstract

A large number of Indian Orchids are being cultivated for ornamental purposes by the commercial growers, but they have not been exploited for thier medicinal value. Collection of medicinal orchids from the natural forests and their cultivation in the green house should be encouraged to ensure the ready availability of the raw materials. Druing the exploration of the Kerala forests the authors have collected 13 species of orchids of medicinal importance. Brief description, phenology and properties and uses of each species are given. The need for correct identity of the plant is emphasized in order to obtain the genuine raw material for use in the indigenous system of medicines
