Abstract

An attempt is made in this study to examine the sustainability of a short fallow shifting cultivaion system with respect to productivity, soil changes and vegetation build up. Investigations were carried out in a tribal settlement at Thodukki in Attappady, Kerala. The study observed that the shifting cultivation provides more or less specified levels of production in a block. The sustainability was further analysed in terms of soil and vegetation status. The results indicated that the shifting cultivation in the study area is sustainable
