Abstract

A number of investigators have used remotely sensed data, such as aerial photographs, Landsat-MSS and Thematic Mapper for mapping different types of vegetation in the Silent Valley and its environs. Use of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite data for such studies is relatively recent, and this particular study was undertaken to evaluate the utility of IRS data for vegetation mapping and assessment of the forest status. The study amply demonstrates the feasibility of IRS-1A data in identifying the forest types and associated plantations in the Silent Valley and its environs. The results corroborate with the findings of the earlier investigations carried out using Landsat-MSS and TM data. The study affirms utility of digital techniques using IRS, LISS-I data for forest cover type stratification
