Abstract

Data are reported from plantations established in 1977 at Arippa (Kerala Forest Development Corporation) and Kollathirumed (Vazhachal Forest Division, Kerala) on sandy loam soils; the former site is hilly and the latter gently rolling. Correlation analysis between various soil properties showed that gravel content was negatively correlated with most other soil properties, while organic carbon was positively correlated with exchangeable bases and total nitrogen. Surface soil layers were not compacted. In general, soils were fertile. The humus decomposed to a fulvic type. Tree height and girth were significantly influenced by soil properties, with 46 and 81 of variation, respectively, being attributable to soil properties
