Abstract

An attempt is made in this paper to give an overview of the cane processing industry in Kerala by highlighting the profitability of cane harvesting and processing and marketing of cane products in Kerala. It was observed that cane harvesting from the forest is profitable, but the harvesting policy followed by the State Forest Department is not very effective as it could not avoid middlemen and ensure fair price to the collectors of the cane. The cane processing industry is in doldrums because of low profit. Inefficient marketing strategy and practices of the manufacturers have also contributed much to this
