Abstract

Census of birds spread over three years showed high values of diversity indices in Attappady forests adjacent to Silent Valley National park. Eleven migratory species were recorded from the area. Species-abudance distribution analysis showed absence of a single dominant species or group of species and the presence of a long series of very rare species. The study areas followed Truncated Long-normal distribution model which indicates the existence of an undisturbed and highly diverse bird community in the area. Considering this it is recommended to add this area in to the existing Silent Valley National Park
