Abstract

Consistent exploitation of our living resources without any sytematic and scientific methods have led to considerable damage to the environment as a whole, sometimes to an alarming extent (Anantha Krishanan, 1980) . Forests and wildlife have been equally affected by such human activities, and in recent years attempts are being made to conserve them, though not to the extent that is desired. Kerala has only less than 20 of the total land available as forests. To achieve the major objective of protecting and maintaining the existing forest wealth along with the supporting animal life, many scientifically oriented action programmes are to be properly planned and implemented. Timely review of the overall activities of the Forest Department would also appear very essential. Proper legislation to establish National parks, Wildlife sanctuaries, rearing of endangered species in zoo, etc are discussed in the paper
