Abstract

The results are reported of a preliminary field trial conducted at Nilambur, Kerala, in 1983. Stumps were prepared from 18-month-old E. tereticornis seedlings raised in standard nursery bedsthey were of 3 sizes (15 cm root and 5 cm shootand 10 cmroot and 2. 5 and 5 cm shoot) and stored under 3 conditions (in a pit for 11 days, or in gunny bags in the shade for 4 and 11 days) . Three-month-old polypot seedlings were used for comparison (the bag was removed before planting) . Stock was planted in single rows with 1 m between plants and 2 m between rows. In all, there were ten treatments and the observations were recorded for five months. Among treatments, the best survival was obtained with the largest stumps stored for 4 days (planted in crowbar holes) and the 3-month-old polypot seedlings (planted in pits of 30X30X30 cm) . Height increment in all ten treatments was not significantly different
