Abstract

Forest entomological research in India is about a century old. Based on a case study of teak defoliator control, suggestions are made to overcome the constraints to effective development and practice of IPM. These include (1) a shift from descriptive-qualitative to quantitative research on the population dynamics of pests and the use of mathematical modelling and simulation techniques for preliminary screening of pest management options, (2) a shift in the attitude of entomologists from 'paper-publication research' towards problem solving research and (3) imaginative research management by administrators aimed at reversal of the present trend of individualised, piece-meal research and providing adequate recognition and rewards for applied research and extension
