Abstract

Insect defoliation of teak is a long recognized problem of India. A critical review of past attempts to estimate loss of wood increment due to defoliation shows that no reliable estimate is available. The loss due to defoliation is still an impression and the response to it emotional. A realistic appraisal of the damage in economic terms is essential before attempting contol measures, especially aerial spraying of insecticides. The need for detailed investigations on the nature and caused of fluctuations in the populations of the defoliator complex is stressed to decide on the best pest management strategy
