Abstract

From the field observations in the forests of Saurashtra (mainly Gir forests of Gujarat), India, during the period of 1975-79, the author observed some anomalies in vegetation characteresand hence feels that the following modifications are to be made in the calculation of Composite indices like importance value index, (IVI) and Continuum index (CI), of vegetation. From the study in the area it was observed that in normal case, the dominant species shows high IVI. It is worthwhile to note the impact of 'false dominants' in the microclimatic conditions by creating a cool atmosphere inside the forests which greatly influence the fauna in such areas
